Midnight Requisition

2015 was a year of great changes and shifts.  I look forward to greeting new challenges and adventures in 2016 as well as rekindling my artistic practice.  This is a shot of a small embroidered wallet I made at the end of last year.  I was really happy with the finished product, especially the pencil-drawn pattern and the braided string closure.

I'm going to get back into posting photos of recent work on here.  This is my piece Marker from 2012.

Here is a snapshot of some new pieces I have been working on since the move to San Diego.  The change in scenery has definitely affected my color palette and also my approach with the water colors and the embroidery.  As I move closer to finishing each piece I will post more close-ups. Great rug, right?

The other day Ian and I were in the ocean at La Jolla and I saw this cute little fellow a few hiding a few feet from me.  There are lots of sting and bat rays out here.  I think this guy was a sting ray. They tend to be disinterested in people unless you step on them. Since landing in San Diego I have seen two pods of dolphins, one sting ray, seals and sea lions galore.  Not to be greedy but I am hoping for a whale spotting sometime soon too.

I got a chance to crash my good friend Julia 's art residency at Centrum in Port Townsend last week.  I am calling it my two day art residency.  My wonderful blog readers know I am a fan of Port Townsend and this second visit did not disappoint.  Photos of the new work to come soon.

The top pieces are for some work I'm creating for a show at Prism curated by the multi-talented Serrah Russell and the bottom piece is a Bon Jovi commission (well...not for Bon Jovi but you get the idea).

I've started to work with text again, a little bit.  This is from 2012 but more text is on it's way in 2013.

Here is a recent-ish work called "Labor".  I used beet dye for the color variation.

I'm looking forward to a spring and summer of waxing cotton and experimenting with making new textiles.  Let the fun begin!

I made my first attempt at a home-loom and weaving this evening.  Well, not quite my first since I did do a bit of pot-holder weaving circa 1990.   I'm pretty happy with the results and I really like the simplicity and possibilities of the new technique.  Any weavers out there with recommendations?
